Adventurer of the Year 2015

The Tacoma News Tribune has selected a NOWSA swimmer for its 2015 Adventurer of the Year. Swimmer Andrew Malinak completed three NOWSA swims this summer, including the Bert Thomas Swim (June), a Bainbridge Island Circumnavigation (August), and the Strait of Juan de Fuca (September). Malinak holds this distinction along with seven other outdoor athletes completing outstanding triathlons, rowing events, cross-country walks, mountain cycling, and endurance runs.

The full article can be found at the News Tribune’s website: 2015 Adventurers of the Year.

The News Tribune originally covered Malinak’s swim from Tacoma to Seattle in an article on 6 June 2015 and a follow-up on 13 June 2015.

Congratulations, and we look forward to many more NOWSA swimmers undertaking equally worthy feats in the coming years.

Ratification for 2015 season

On 14 November 2015, NOWSA held its regular Winter board meeting. During the meeting, the NOWSA board ratified three swims completed during the 2015 season. All three swims were completed by NOWSA President Andrew Malinak (29 of Seattle, WA), and include one “first” for his clockwise  swim around Bainbridge Island in August.

In addition to 2015 swims, the board also approved several Historical swims which took place before the inception of the organization. Swims designated as Historical are believed to be unassisted and in the Spirit of Marathon Swimming despite having not been observed by the local sanctioning body. These swims are included on the Swim Results page of NOWSA’s website.

The NOWSA board also approved five marathon swim routes, as well as six observers.

NOWSA is looking forward to another successful year in 2016 with new swimmers and new swims.
